Mystery Shopping Scam
By: Doug Rector  -  8/22/2008

If it looks too good to be true, it is.

A current scam that is going around are postings on Craig's List, and even classified ads, advertising a money making opportunity for mystery shoppers.

This is how this one scam worked.

The company tells you they will send you a money order(s) for usually a large amount.

Your job is to take the money order and deposit it into your bank account. For this example let's say the money order is for $500.  After you deposit it you go to WalMart and make a $20 purchase as a mystery shopper.  You then keep $200 for yourself then wire $280 to the company who sent the money order. You then send a written report of the shop to an address (does not matter if you do this or not, it is just a ploy).  Wow! You just made $200 and got to keep the merchadise you purchased!

All is good until a week or so later when you receive a call from the bank saying the money order you deposited is counterfeit.  Now YOU owe the bank $500 and there is nothing you can do about it since these ads or emails originate from another country.

Can you tell which is the fake money order and which one is legitimate (don't let the amount fool you).

If it is too good to be true, it is.
